Haulmark All Star Sprint Results - Attica Raceway Park- Sat. 4/16/05 By Brian Liskai - ATTICA, Ohio - Stevie Smith looked headed to a clean sweep of the Coors Light Attica Spring Nationals with the All Star Circuit of Champions Saturday, but a tangle with a lapped car with five laps to go cost the New Oxford, Pa. driver, as veteran Danny Smith was there to take advantage and the 40-lap feature victory. The battle for the lead began in heavy lapped traffic on lap 27 of the non-stop 40-lap affair, with D. Smith hanging on to the lead he held since passing Mike Brecht on lap 3. S. Smith tried a slide job on D. Smith on lap 31 coming out of turn two, but couldn't make it stick, but managed to make the move work coming out of turn four to take the lead.
S. Smith, who won Friday's All Star feature at Attica, took the five-lap to go signal and sailed into turn one, only to run into the lapped machine of Dean Jacobs and bouncing off the high side of the track, allowing Danny Smith to regain the lead and three-time All Star champ Chad Kemenah to move into second. Kemenah would get to D. Smith's rear bumper the last three laps, but had to settle behind the Danville, Indiana driver at the checkered. S. Smith recovered for third, with 17th starting Dale Blaney finishing fourth; Jeremy Campbell fifth; Mark Keegan, sixth; Jesse Hockett, 7th; 12th starting Craig Mintz, 8th; Randy Hannigan 9th; and John Ivy rounding out the top 10.
"When Stevie went by me I thought it was over," said Danny Smith beside his Doug Williams Trucking/Jet Express sprinter. "The track slicked off and everyone was pretty equal which made it hard to get by lapped cars. A little rubber got laid on the bottom and Stevie found it before I did and I thought it was over, but I guess he got into a lapped car and we got around for the win." "I have to dedicate this win to all the speed shops, especially Shirley Kear at Kear's Speedshop, and all the parts people and everyone who helped me put this team back together," said Smith about the winter fire that destroyed his race shop. "You fans don't realize who much your encouragement, prayers and support meant to me."
At the drop of the green, All Star rookie candidate Mike Brecht and Jesse Hockett paced the pack, with Brecht jumping into the lead. Smith, who started outside of the second row, took the lead from Brecht on lap three, with Keegan moving into second on lap 7. Hockett would move into third behind D. Smith and Keegan on lap 9, with eighth starting Stevie Smith moving into fourth a lap later. By lap 11 the running order was D. Smith, Keegan, Hockett, S. Smith, Kemenah, Jac Haudenschild and Jeremy Campbell. The leaders hit traffic by lap 12, and Stevie Smith was the man on the move. He moved into third on lap 14 and into second on lap 18. At the half-way mark of the 40-lap event, the running order was D. Smith, S. Smith, Keegan, Kemenah, Hockett, Campbell, Kenny Jacobs and Craig Mintz. The top spots remained the same until lap 24 when Kemenah moved around Keegan for third. That set up the scramble the last 10 laps.
For Kemenah, it was a good weekend of racing, as he scored a third Friday night to add to Saturday's second place showing. "The car really took off in the middle of the race, but I knew I had my work cut out for me with Danny and Stevie ahead of us," said the Findlay, Ohio driver beside his Underground Utilities #15k. "This is a good way to start the All Star season up north...we gave the fans some pretty good racing."
Despite the bobble that cost him the Attica sweep, Stevie Smith was happy with the weekend's outcome for his RACE Foundation team. "We were terrible at Eldora last weekend. My dad and the crew really made a lot of changes to the car and we were a lot better this weekend. This gives me a lot more confidence for the season," said Stevie Smith.
