...They had 65 cars of the 410 variety at Knoxville Saturday night. There is new clay laid down at the home of the Nationals. Drivers tell us the track was rough after a Friday rainout.
RALPH CAPITANI NAMED ‘MOST INFLUENTIAL’ IN SPRINT CAR POLL - By Tom Schmeh - KNOXVILLE, IOWA (March 15, 2004) - For the first time since the introduction of the annual special edition North American Sprint Car Poll honoring the sport’s thirty most influential leaders in 1991, World of Outlaws (WoO) founder and president Ted Johnson is not ranked ‘number one’. That honor, as determined by an industry-wide voting panel of manufacturers, media members, sanctioning officials and promoters, now belongs to Knoxville Raceway director of racing Ralph Capitani. “Cappy” captured 11 of the 53 first-place ballots cast in the 2004 poll, the same number as garnered by both second-ranked Earl Baltes of Eldora Speedway and the third-rated Johnson (more)
First Entry for Midgets at Knoxville Arrives - KNOXVILLE, IOWA (March 10, 2004) - The first official entry for the June 4-5 Pepsi/Mt. Dew Knoxville Midget Championship has arrived this week at the Knoxville Raceway. According to office manager Arleta Voyce, “Andy Mason of Westminster, Colorado, has the distinction of being this year’s first paid entry, and he has chosen to represent the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association. The Knoxville Raceway is special place in the hearts of sprint car fans worldwide. The facility that each August plays host to the biggest sprint car event of the year, the Knoxville Nationals, is a must see. The National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum sits outside turn two, loaded with dirt track nostalgia from yesteryear.
The track itself is a wide racey joint, with riverbottom clay covering the surface. The pits are newly paved as of 2002. Lighting is first rate. There are suites aligning the top of the track. The wireless microphones work well, and announcing is top-notch.
