Home State Win for Kinser at Tri-State Speedway
Haubstadt, IN—April 21 2007--By: Tony Veneziano, World of Outlaws PR Director
It was pretty easy to tell when Steve Kinser was on the track on Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway, because each time his machine took to the high-banked ¼-mile in his home state of Indiana, the crowd was on their feet cheering, and the flashbulbs from their cameras could be seen illuminating the track from one side to the other.
The biggest cheer came after Kinser led all 40-laps of the A-Feature and climbed out of his car in victory lane, after holding off Jac Haudenschild for the $10,000 World of Outlaws A-Feature win.
For the native of Bloomington, Indiana, it was his second World of Outlaws A-Feature win of the season, and the 535th of his career. He has seven World of Outlaws triumphs at Tri-State Speedway, dating back to 1980, and won in his last visit to the track in 2005, to give him two straight.
“It was a good weekend for us,” said Kinser, driver of the Q Oil Maxim. “We had a good fast race car, and everything worked out. We changed cars this week, and this new car was pretty good for us all weekend. We had a couple cars upstairs in the trailer, but this new one felt better than those, so we decided to go ahead and run it.”
The 20-time World of Outlaws champion led from the drop of the green, as he used the high side of the track to win a drag race down the front straightaway with Danny Lasoski. By just the sixth lap of the 40-lap contest, Kinser was already in lapped traffic.
Early in the race, Paul McMahan closed in on Kinser in traffic and took a couple of looks to the low side of the track, and took the lead briefly coming entering the second turn, but he jumped the cushion and it took a few laps for him to recover. Likewise, Tim Kaeding, tried to power his way under Kinser, but the momentum from the high side of the track helped him fend off all challengers. Each time Kinser was credited as being the leader at the start-finish line, thus leading wire-to-wire.
“I got a little loose at the end and had to go back to the top, but I think that was the place to be anyway,” explained Kinser of his late race strategy.
While some drivers worried in the late going, whether they would have enough fuel or not, Kinser was more focused on making sure he got strong restarts after each caution period. Five cautions in the last 15 laps of the event slowed down a race that saw a blistering pace for the first 25 circuits.
“I wasn’t too worried about fuel,” said Kinser. “It’s just so tough to run around the top, and not let someone get a run on you on the first lap (on a restart). Once I got my momentum going, I was all right.”
Jac Haudenschild thrilled the crowd late in the race as he charged into the Top-Five and lined up second after a late caution. He used the extreme high side of the track, and was just inches off the wall as he chased down Kinser. He was just inches off the wall and a couple of times jumped the cushion as he was pushing his car as hard as it would go, and thus lost some momentum on the high side of the track as he chased his first win of the season.
“The Rick Wright car felt good,” said Haudenschild, driver of the Wright One Construction Maxim. “The crew had the car going in the right direction. It’s been working pretty good here lately. We’ve been a front running car, we just haven’t been able to win any races. We’re getting close and if we can get consistent, we are going to win.”
Jason Meyers powered his way to another solid finish, as he was third in the Primerica Financial Maxim. The native of Clovis, California has finished in the Top-Five in each of the last three races, as he settled into the Top-10 in the championship standings. He began the night by setting fast time in qualifying for the second time this season.
“Once again it was a good finish, but we are a little disappointed,” said Meyers. “We didn’t really have a great car tonight, but we started in a position where we might have had a shot at winning it. We just missed the set-up a little bit, but that will happen. We still were able to hang on for another Top-Three finish and I am really proud of this team. They have been doing a great job. They have done a great job all year, and that breaks just haven’t come our way. It’s starting to turn around and we are looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Jeremy Campbell earned his best finish of the season, with a fourth-place effort in the RLM Financial Maxim. Campbell made a couple of late runs on Haudenchild and at one point before a caution came out was side-by-side with the veteran and just inches behind Kinser. After earning a spot in the dash for the second straight race, the sophomore driver has plenty of momentum to build on.
“The car was awesome all night,” said Campbell. “In hot laps and qualifying it was great. We made the dash for the second night in a row and that is important. In the feature, we were rolling. We were cruising through the middle and just kept plucking away at the cars, one-by-one.”
After turning the third fastest lap in time trials in his first ever visit to Tri-State Speedway as well as earning a spot in the dash, rookie Zach Chappell earned his best career World of Outlaws finish, with a fifth. The native of Talala, Oklahoma lined up for the A-Feature in 10th and steadily worked his way forward in the Kantor Oil Company XXX.
“We are very pleased with how tonight went,” said Chappell. “We have been struggling and we have finally got the groove of this car. This new XXX Wesmar-powered car is doing real well. We tried some new stuff again tonight it some of it worked. We also had some people give us a hand tonight and let us know what we are doing, just trying to help us out. It worked tonight. We can’t complain that’s for sure.”
Donny Schatz turned in a very impressive run, as he charged from the 18th starting spot to finish sixth in the ParkerStore J&J. With his 14th Top-10 finish in the first 15 races of the season, the reigning series champion retook the point lead from Joey Saldana, who came home 14th.
Chad Kemenah finished seventh after earning a spot in the dash aboard the Arizonatools.com Maxim. Danny Lasoski stated on the pole and wound up eighth in the Roth Motorsports Eagle. Terry McCarl was ninth in the Big Game Treestands Eagle, to earn his first Top-10 with new crew chief Brian Kemenah. Craig Dollansky rounded out the Top-10 in the Karavan Trailers. Maxim.
The World of Outlaws return to action on Saturday, April 28 in their first of two visits this season to the famed Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa.
