After a couple of red flags, Wayne Johnson jumped out to lead the first seven
laps before Haudenschild tracked him down and dove under him in Turns 1 and 2
to swipe the lead on Lap 8 in the Wright One Construction Maxim. From there, he
had to endure a couple of cautions, but on each restart Haudenschild quickly
raced out to a commanding lead and powered his way to the RacinSoles Victory
Lane.
“The car felt good and it was handling really well,” Haudenschild said. “The
track was heavy, but you could race anywhere on it. It was a good track to run
on tonight.”
Craig Dollansky continued his impressive streak to post a runner-up finish in
the Karavan Trailers Maxim with Terry McCarl in the
Daryn Pittman drove to a sixth-place finish in the Titan Garages & Carports
Maxim followed by Tim Shaffer in the Casey’s General Stores Maxim, Stevie Smith
in the Team RAACE J&J, Wayne Johnson in the Clark Construction J&J and
Brooke Tatnell in the Race Outfitters/Garlic Jim’s Pizza Eagle.
Haudenschild got into lapped traffic a couple of times, but nothing slowed him
down on the blistering fast 3/8-mile oval.
“You can see a lot better [in the lead], without the mud flying around,”
Haudenschild said. “It definitely helped to be out front. We had lapped cars
real quick so we were always behind somebody.”
Dollansky gave it everything he had in finishing second after starting fifth.
He weaved in and out of traffic and ran down Haudenschild at the end, charging
hard through the checkered flag on the inside to pass a couple of cars at the
flagstand with a move that sent him airborne as the huge crowd roared with
approval.
“Those last couple of laps, I was running him down pretty hard,” Dollansky
said. “He got crossed up coming off Turn 4 for the checkers and we got right
beside him. We scrambled all night long. We had trouble with the motor in the
heat race and then in the dash. We changed motors after the heat race, thinking
that would cure it, but it didn’t. It really put us behind the eight ball. We
were just trying to keep up with the racecar and do the right things. I would
have liked five more laps out there.”
Dollansky, who was coming off a win in the last race at Tri-State Speedway in
“I feel very good about things right now with the Karavan team,” Dollansky
said. “We’ll continue to work on things each week, and continue to gain on
them. We weren’t perfect tonight, with what we had to do with out car, but we
are learning. This is pretty much a rookie crew and these guys are doing a
great job.”
McCarl not only had his hands full as a driver on Friday night, charging
through the field trying to pull out the win, but also as a promoter. McCarl
teamed up with SLS Promotions and Mike Frank and his U.S. 36 Raceway staff to
put on an event that left people wanting a quick return to the track about an
hour north of
“I care a lot about the promotion end,” McCarl said. “I want the fans and
racers to be happy. It’s unfortunate that a lot of guys got stuff tore up
tonight. It’s been raining for two weeks and we haven’t raced. Whenever you put
rain on dirt tracks, this stuff happens. It’s dirt track racing and when you
get rain for two weeks the track will be rough, but the fans saw an awesome
show.”
For McCarl, who believes he may have had a broken wheel toward the end of the
race, the event was mainly about finishing, knowing two more nights of racing
await this weekend.
“It’s a long season,” he said. “We had some tough days at Eldora and Pevely,
and it catches up with everyone over the long season. It’s how you deal with
adversity, and it shows what kind of person you are. After starting 14th and
running top three, that is a great accomplishment for my team. It might have
helped us to run the “B” main because we knew we were not quite right with the
car and had to go a little further. My guys did a great job and I was just out
there hanging on.”
Chad Kemenah started the feature in eighth and worked his way up to fourth, a
result that helped to bolster his lead in the chase for the Kevin Gobrecht
Rookie of the Year Award Presented By Maxim Racing and ButlerBuilt.
“We struggled really bad early in the night in the heat race,” Kemenah said.
“We were so tight we couldn’t turn. This wet heavy stuff is not really what we
are accustomed to. My team did a great job working together, and that says a
lot about my crew. To start eighth at a place like this where it is hard to
pass and come home fourth, we are very fortunate.”
Points leader Donny Schatz lost 20 points in the championship standings after
getting upside down twice, once in the dash, once in the feature, when he made
contact with other cars. Schatz was able to restart the feature at the rear of
the field but retired shortly after with mechanical trouble, settling for a
21st-place finish. He was the second-fastest car in time trials in the
ParkerStore J&J and therefore did earn four bonus points to lead the series
into
Becca Anderson had a tremendous start to her night in the Woodring Racing
machine as she was the fourth quickest qualifier with a lap of 9.909 seconds
and earned the her first dash win as a Mean 15 driver.
“You just go out and try to click off the best lap you can get,” said
Anderson who was coming off of a ninth-place finish at Tri-State Speedway is
looking forward to heading back East in a couple of weeks to some tracks she is
very familiar with. At the same time, she is making the most of what she is
learning day in and day out on the

• FAST QUALIFIER: Paul McMahan paced the 39-car field in the Bass Pro Shops
Eagle with a lap around the 3/8-mile oval in 9.846 seconds at 120.658 mph. For
his qualifying effort, McMahan earned five bonus points. The next four fastest
qualifiers also earned bonus points, including Donny Schatz (4), Daryn Pittman
(3), Becca Anderson (2) and Brooke Tatnell (1). U.S. 36 Raceway is a
high-banked clay oval, and Paul McMahan now owns the track record.
“You can’t beat that,” McMahan said with the bonus check in his hand. “Usually
it doesn’t pay anything to qualify or be fast. Tonight there was a little bit
more incentive.”
