Feeling Inflated: Terry McCarl’s Tire Call Nets Nodak Win

Minot, N.D.August 19, 2006By: Tony Veneziano, WoO Sprint Series PR Director

Terry McCarl knows a thing or two about promoting races. For the past couple of seasons, he has donned the promoter’s hat in his native state of Iowa. The always jovial driver knows that the best way to get people in the stands is to put on a great race on the track. That is exactly what he did in the driver’s seat on Saturday night at Nodak Speedway, as he battled Craig Dollansky and Donny Schatz, before a standing room only crowd, the largest ever in the 51 year history of the oval.

McCarl saved the rubber on his Hoosier tires for a final charge to the checkered flag as he drove to the RacinSoles Victory Lane for the second time this season in a World of Outlaws Sprint Series A-feature event.

Dollansky jumped to an early lead in the Karavan Trailers Maxim before McCarl busted into the top spot for a lap all the while
Minot native Schatz charged from 14th to the top three. When McCarl and Dollansky made contact on Lap 22, Schatz drove by them both to grab the lead. But the soft tire compound Schatz had on the right rear of his ParkerStore J&J couldn’t handle the heat and finally expired on Lap 28.

That put McCarl’s
Big Game Treestands Eagle back in front on the 3/8-mile oval, and he held off Dollansky down the stretch for the victory with Dollansky in the runner-up position. Afterward, though, Dollansky’s machine, with a right rear tire that had gone flat at the checkered flag, didn’t meet the 1,375-pound weight requirement and he was dropped to 24th.

After a race-long battle, Brooke Tatnell finally got by Joey Saldana at the end. Tatnell’s Race Outfitter’s Eagle was scored second when Dollansky’s car was disqualified, with Saldana’s Mopar-powered Dodge/Curb Records JEI in third and Daryn Pittman’s Titan Garages & Carports Maxim and Chad Kemenah’s RacinSoles.com Eagle rounding out the top five.

McCarl who qualified second on the night was ecstatic after climbing from his winning car. He was happy to pick up the win not only for himself and his team, but also for the fans who turned out in droves, and got to see an exciting race, as the series visited the track for the first time ever.

“That was a knock down, drag out race,” said McCarl. “We really needed this one, the team needed it. It feels really good.”

Tatnell who finished second was disappointed that he did not win, but he was also pleased with the result knowing how grueling of a race it was. The native of San Souci, NSW, Australia lined up sixth for the 40-lap event on the high-banked and blistering fast track. He thrilled the crowd as he had a torrid battle with Saldana in the late-going for the third spot.

“I thought we were going to find the rubber before the lead three guys were,” Tatnell said. “We had a hard race with Joey (Saldana). I had to run him hard to get him out of line and basically run him out of tire. I knew how hard we had to drive it. We didn’t have much tire left at the end.”

McCarl and Dollansky had a very entertaining battle going for the lead that had the crowd on their feet. After leading the first 20 laps, Dollansky relinquished the lead to the hard charging McCarl coming off the fourth turn. The lead though for the Altoona, Iowa native, was short-lived as Schatz slipped by the pair as they battled on the next lap.

“We made a little contact,” McCarl said. “He (Dollansky) apologized to me after Michigan (Butler Speedway), and I guess I owe him an apology after this one. He told me that is good hard racing for the lead. That’s what it’s about, World of Outlaws racing. These guys are all professionals out there. We banged wheels a little bit, but on this type of track you have to check up a little bit in traffic. I slid up into him a little bit, but I don’t think it was too rough. It just put a mark on my tire.”

Since it was the first ever visit to the track for the series, many of the teams were unsure of what type of tires to put on their cars. McCarl and his team contemplated this for most of the night, and in the end chose the right one for the feature.

“I went with a little harder tire than Donny (Schatz) and Craig (Dollansky),” said McCarl. “I was a little loose at the beginning. I had to give up a little at the start, which is real difficult as a driver. Once the track came to us, I knew we had a really good car. Donny got by me and then I got back by him, and then got Craig, but Donny got us while we were battling. I was still on his bumper and just waiting for traffic. I think we had something for him, unfortunately he didn’t make it to the end.”

McCarl knew that Schatz would be on a mission in the feature, after starting 14th. He enjoyed the battles he had with the hometown hero, until a flat tire took forced the reigning Knoxville Nationals winner, to the work area.

“Donny Schatz, he is on a tear,” said McCarl. “He has a great team and is a great guy, and I am so proud of him winning the Nationals. They really deserved it. Tonight he had the fastest car early, and we were lucky enough to finish.”

The win could not have come at a better time for McCarl. Still healing from a severely broken left leg suffered earlier this season at Sharon Speedway, he and he team sat down before heading to the Dakota’s to discuss where they were at. Never one to hold back, McCarl rallied the troops and lifted everyone’s spirits with his energetic optimism, and that showed on Saturday night as he claimed the $10,000 win.

“I came back from the broken leg and was strong right out of the box,” McCarl said. “Then a week or so before the (Knoxville) Nationals, we started falling off a little. We had a big ‘pow-wow’ before we came on this trip and kind of straightened everyone’s attitude out a little bit. Hopefully we can turn this thing around and finish the year strong, and I can get back into 100 percent shape for next year.”

Tatnell continues to rack up top-five finishes, as he sits fifth in series points. With his runner-up showing on Saturday night, he now has 21 top-fives on the year, second only to Schatz. He was fast all night long, qualifying in the top-ten and also making the dash, where earned the sixth starting spot in the A-Feature.

“It’s a second again,” said Tatnell. “We’re consistent, but we just need to be winning some more races.”

Saldana lined up third for the race, and darted to the second spot on the first lap, with a strong pass of McCarl. The Brownsburg, Ind., native slipped back to fourth on the 12th lap, but regained the spot on the lap-29 caution for Schatz’s flat tire. He mirrored McCarl for most of the time looking for any opening he could.

“We put too soft of a tire on, but I felt pretty good,” said Saldana. “Terry (McCarl) was racing pretty hard tonight. We were just hanging on when the rubber came down. It’s good come home third.”

Saldana earned five bonus points in the night, as he was the fastest qualifier of the 30 cars on-hand, setting a new track record in the process. With the solid finish, he now has 37 top-10 finishes, which is tops in the series. He was relieved to finish the race, and is excited to head to the scenic Northwest to Skagit (Wash.) Speedway this coming weekend. He won the last World of Outlaws event at the track in 2002, plus his crew is very familiar with the track, as is his car owner, NASCAR star Kasey Kahne.

“Last time I was there, we won,” Saldana said. “I feel pretty confident going in there. Willie (Kahne) and everybody have run Skagit. That is where they grew up. Hopefully we can put in a good showing. Kasey (Kahne) will be running a 360-sprint car there the Wednesday after we are there. He may be there or he may not. Hopefully we can put a good run in.”

Daryn Pittman used a fast car and patience to work his way into the top-five on Saturday night. He passed Chad Kemenah on the 11th lap, and then set his sights on Tatnell. He moved into fifth at Schatz had his misfortune. At the checkered flag, he was fifth, but was elevated one spot after Dollansky’s car came up light on the scales.

Pittman, who was the first driver to congratulate McCarl on his win, was very happy with his first visit to the high-banked track.

“This is an awesome facility and a beautiful racetrack,” said Pittman of Owasso, Okla. “I don’t think anybody thought it would lay rubber, honestly. That was a big shock to everyone out there. They did a good job trying to re-work it. It just rubbered up real quick, and it was hard on tires.”

Chad Kemenah, who currently leads the battle for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award Presented by Maxim Racing and ButlerBuilt, had a strong night from the time his crew unloaded his car, until the final checkered flag flew. He qualified sixth and then backed that up with a fifth place finish in the dash, the same place he would wind up after the 40-lap main event.

“To come home fifth is really good,” Kemenah said. “You don’t like to do that with the misfortune of other people, like Craig (Dollansky) and Donny (Schatz). With the luck we have been having this year, we’ll take them however we can get them. We’re just lucky to finish and had just enough rubber on the tires to do that.”

Dion Hindi picked up his second straight top-10 finish, backing up an eighth place finish at Black Hills Speedway on Thursday with a solid sixth place run on Saturday night. The native of Albuquerque, N.M. now has eight top-10 finishes on the season. The competitor in him though, always wants to do better.

“I’m a little frustrated with third, because I think we should have been third,” said Hindi. “I had a couple cars passed early in the race before the rubber got down. I just made a couple mistakes and got pushed over the banking a couple times and a couple cars got back around me. On this racetrack, with the tire we had on, I am just happy to finish. We started to take it easy on the thing, just to make sure we finished. We have 24 or so races left to go, and hopefully we’ll be in the top 10 in all of them.”

Wanting to put on a good show for his loyal fans, Schatz gave it everything he had. Every time he made a pass, a deafening roar went up from the crowd, which was a sea of yellow with hats and shirts supporting their hometown driver. After some quick work by his Ricky Warner led crew to change his tire, Schatz was able to re-start and powered his way back to a respectable seventh place finish.

“We had a great race car to come from 14th to the lead,” said Schatz. “Once we got there, the game was to save tires. We ran over something and cut the tire. It was just a matter of time before it went down. I could feel it going down. To come back out and get back up a little ways, we are happy with that. Some night’s are great and go your way and some don’t. We’ve had a lot go our way this year, and tonight did not. We wanted to win it, but didn’t.”

Lou Kennedy Jr., who made the trip south from Canada was eighth in the Shamrock Carpets Eagle, as Jason Martin’s NOS Energy Drink/Mafia Motorsports Maxim and Bill Rose’s Durty Country Motorsports Maxim completed the Top 10.

The
World of Outlaws next kick off the 2006 Gold Rush Tour by invading the Northwest on Aug. 25-26 at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., for a two-day event paying $25,000 to the winner on Aug. 26.
