Daryn Pittman Slides to World of Outlaws Feature Victory at BMP Speedway in Billings (COMPLETE REPORT)

Billings, MT — August 20, 2005 — By Chris Dolack, WoO Sprint Series Public Relations Director

One night after BMP Speedway chewed up several cars, the track was completely transformed Saturday into a fast, slick surface with multiple grooves that allowed Donny Schatz to dominate the first 38 laps of the main event that launches the World of Outlaws Sprint Series Wild, Wild Northwest Tour.

The only problem for Schatz was that the feature was 40 laps. The rear end on his ParkerStore J&J failed him with two laps to go, marking the third time this season he’s had a mechanical problem while on his way to victory.

Daryn Pittman took advantage of Schatz’s misfortune. After starting ninth, Pittman worked his way past Jac Haudenschild, then Kraig Kinser and finally Steve Kinser to position himself behind Schatz in the waning laps. When Schatz slowed heading into Turn 3 and eventually stopped as he was coming around to take the white flag, Pittman swooped into the lead before the caution waved.

Once in front, Pittman locked his Titan Racing Maxim to the bottom of the track and had a lapped car behind him as a slight buffer that made Kinser have to beat him on the top. Kinser, the preliminary feature winner Friday night, ran second for much of the event but no matter which lane he chose around the 3/8-mile oval he wasn’t able to catch Schatz or Pittman.

Pittman never flinched on the green-white-checkered restart as he held off Kinser by 0.18 to win an A-feature for the first time since he took the checkered flag in April at Wichita’s 81 Speedway, also a 3/8-mile oval. Steve Kinser was second, followed by Kraig Kinser, Haudenschild, Danny Lasoski and Jason Meyers.

“I really didn’t know what was happening behind me,” said Pittman, a Mean 15 racer and native of Owasso, Okla., who won the Clean-O World Challenge last week during the Knoxville Nationals. “I thought I could hear [Kinser] back there. I just tried to put it out of my mind. When I saw Schatz’s [rear end] blow up, I could smell him for a few laps and I was hoping he would just pull in and let it go because I didn’t think [Kinser] had anything for me.

“I knew at the restart he was going to have a good run at us and luckily we were able to hold him off. The racetrack was probably a little tough to pass at the end but if there’s a way around he’s going to find it.”

Kinser knew his only way to win a race for the fourth consecutive time in Billings was to blast his way around the top. The lapped car of Brian Paulus went to the bottom on the restart, trying to stay out of the mix, as Kinser shot directly to the cushion in his Quaker State Maxim and tried to get a run on Pittman. But Pittman, like Schatz before him, was working perfectly around the inside and smoothly turned the final two laps in front to win.

“I didn’t have a shot on the bottom,” said Kinser, a Mean 15 racer from Bloomington, Ind., who has a 450-point lead in the championship standings in his quest for a 20th series title. “I told [Paulus] to go to the bottom that last time. I wasn’t going to pass [Pittman] by following him so I thought I’d take a shot around the top, but I got my wing back too far and I couldn’t get it back forward and I had it bouncing around. On that last yellow I ran it back forward and took a stab but just didn’t quite get it made.

“Donny was a little faster than I was. I’d get up on the top, but I was a little tight up there. He had the fastest car tonight. It looked like he was going to win the race. It was a shame they had to break.”

For Kraig Kinser, a third-place finish in his Remy Maxim wrapped up a whirlwind week that started with a victory in the Knoxville Nationals last Sunday, a 16th-place finish Tuesday in Fargo, N.D., an eighth-place run in an ARCA Re/Max Series race Friday afternoon in Brooklyn, Mich., followed by a cross-country flight and a seventh-place finish in the preliminary feature Friday night. After setting quick time to start Saturday’s program, he was consistently among the leaders for much of the main event.

“I think we had a chance to win that thing after Donny blew,” said Kraig Kinser, the 2004 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year. “He was pretty much gone until then. We goofed up on one restart and were passed by numerous cars and had to work our way back up to third. It was a good solid finish to the weekend.

“It was a totally different track tonight. It was kind of like it was last year with a lot of good racing. When this track gets slicked off it has some unbelievable racing on it. [Promoter] Fred [Brownfield] did a good job getting the track ready tonight and put on a pretty good show I think.”

Schatz, a four-time A-feature winner this season, was obviously disappointed with the result Saturday, one night after finishing second in the preliminary to be locked into the main event. Still, his dominating run is another sign the team is coming together with the help of new crew chief Ricky Warner.

“That’s all we’re concerned about,” said Schatz, a Mean 15 racer from Fargo, N.D., who wound up being credited with an 18th-place finish. “Someone else won the race, it was a gift. We were going to run that straight through, he wasn’t going to win it. We’ve won races that way and I’m sure he’ll win some more that way. It’s just the way it goes. It’s disheartening, but everything Ricky and I seem to be doing is making strides that are really good. We’re awful excited about that. It’s a shame to sit off five days until next weekend but that’s what it is. We’ll go back to work here and try to work on everything and figure out what the problem was. It’s just little bitty things that can happen and you can’t expect it not to when you’ve had personnel change as much as we’ve had. Everybody’s different. We’re not dissatisfied. We know we were the dominant car. We’re happy with that. We just didn’t win. We know we can come back here and be as good as we were tonight so we’ll be in good shape.”

The change to the racing surface certainly benefited Pittman. In the preliminary on Friday, he was one of five cars to flip and bring out a red flag in the 30-lap race that had 10 cautions. While he won from the pole at 81 Speedway, he seemed to be just as strong Saturday night coming through the field.

“I prefer half-miles, but I’m not as good on them,” said Pittman, who was coming off of a third-place finish Tuesday at Red River Valley Speedway and has finished in the top 10 in the past five A-feature events. “These 3/8ths are my type of deal. When they get real slick like this it’s great. [Friday] night was not my type of racetrack. We turned over and still finished 12th and we thought that was a good night because I just don’t do good on rough, heavy racetracks. We’re geared up for these types of deals. These fit me and my crew and it’s good to get another win like that. It’s a little more special starting ninth and winning rather than starting on the pole in Wichita because we definitely know we earned this one.”

The World of Outlaws Sprint Series continues the Wild, Wild Northwest Tour with a two-day show Aug. 26-27 at Grays Harbor Speedway in Elma, Wash. The series then closes out the month Aug. 30 at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., where last season Kraig Kinser earned his first career World of Outlaws A-feature victory.

Including preliminaries, the series has raced 11 times this season on tracks that length, at Pike County Speedway, Houston Raceway Park, Batesville Speedway, Outlaw Motor Speedway, 81 Speedway, Huset’s Speedway, Cedar Lake Speedway, Attica Raceway Park, Fulton Speedway and BMP Speedway. Steve Kinser held off Brooke Tatnell to win at Pike County, Donny Schatz edged Steve Kinser at Houston, Kraig Kinser dominated at Batesville, Steve Kinser snuck past Jason Meyers late at Outlaw, Daryn Pittman cruised to victory at 81 Speedway, Jason Meyers outlasted the field at Sharon, Brian Paulus started on the pole and won at Huset’s, Brooke Tatnell picked up his first win of the year at Cedar Lake and his second at Fulton, Stevie Smith won at Attica, and Daryn Pittman and Steve Kinser won at BMP Speedway.

• In the Stacker 2® Dash that set the top six positions for the A-feature, Steve Kinser quickly charged out front and led flag-to-flag to start on the pole for the 10th time this season. Jac Haudenschild started on the inside of Row 2 and followed Kinser to the front, finishing second and earning the outside pole position. Donny Schatz was third, followed by Tim Kaeding, Kraig Kinser and Danny Lasoski.

• In the B-main, Jason Solwold raced to the lead in the first corner and drove away, increasing his lead on each of the 12 laps, not even slowing as he slid through traffic and won by 3.483 seconds. Mean 15 racer Brian Paulus was second with Joe Ramaker of Idaho, Ned Powers of South Dakota and Brandon Johnson of Idaho earning the remaining spots in the main event.

• In the first heat, Brandon Wimmer set the pace for the first nine laps before Terry McCarl reeled him in by cutting to the bottom in Turns 1 and 2 after taking the white flag. McCarl sliced to the lead off of Turn 2 and powered to the checkered flag. Wimmer held on to finish second as Jason Meyers, fast qualifier Kraig Kinser and Jonathan Allard also transferred.

• In the second heat, Jason Sides easily led flag-to-flag, but behind Sides was a big scramble for the four remaining transfer spots. Tim Kaeding worked the cushion to grab second with Paul McMahan, Shane Stewart and Daryn Pittman also earning spots in the A-feature.

• The third heat featured Tim Shaffer and Craig Dollansky, two drivers who led Friday night in the preliminary A-main but had separate incidents that cost them a chance at winning. In the third heat on Saturday, Shaffer and Dollansky shot out to the lead and turned 10 smooth laps, easily sliding through traffic to finish first and second. Also transferring to the main event were Joey Saldana, Brooke Tatnell and Roger Crockett.
