1968
In 1968 the USAC Champ Dirt Cars made their annual trek to Sacramento, CA. In this Jim Chini shot scanned from the 1989 Golden State 100 program, Mario Andretti leads Bud Tingelstad, Bill Vuckovich, and Gary Bettenhausen. The race was won by A.J. Foyt who pocketed $8,300. Bettenhausen was runner-up, Al Unser was third, Andretti fourth, and Bruce Walkup rounded out the top five. (Holtsman Family collection)
In 1968, Kenny Weld went East with this beautiful car of his own design. The car won "between 30 or 40 races", according to Lynn Paxton as told to Open Wheel Magazine writer Jim Donnelly. The restored car was finished by Paxton who used to race against Weld at Williams Grove and Port Royal. (Scanned from OW, October 1989 - Holtsman Family collection).
Ed Wallace Jr. sent us the 1968 Capital Speedway yearbook for scanning. Thanks Ed! ...What we want most right now is information on winning car owners from the 1970 season at Calistoga Speedway. Also - we have holes to fill from the 1989 NARC season. Do you have dates, and details? Contact us.
