- Gary Patterson was the Tri-Holiday, and Dirt Cup points champ.
- Jimmy Sills is a rookie at West Capitol Raceway.
- Rick Ferkel invades ASCOT for Pacific Coast Sprint Car Championship race win.
- Earl Wagner was the Western World winner at Manzanita Speedway in the Hank Smith #5.
- Larry Rice is USAC Midget Champ.
- Jimmy Boyd Wins Gold Cup Record, $2,200, and becomes the first driver ever to turn the 1/4 mile in 12 seconds (12.631)
- Rick Horton is the NARC Champion.

- Australian, Garry Rush caused a stir with a win at West Capitol Raceway, in West Sacramento, CA.
Hi, I really enjoy looking at your website. When I first started going to the races Friday nights were at Roseville, Saturdays at Capital, and Wednesday at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento and Wally Baker was the 2 time defending champ. Wally was always my favorite and I loved the open comp battles in the Race of Champions with Al Pombo, who was my favorite "out of towner". Anyway, the last race I attended was the 1973 Gold Cup which included my favorites as well as a dominating performance by Jimmy Boyd. Best I remember was he lapped the field and Baker was a non factor, as were the rest of the drivers. I took a bunch of pictures from my vantage point in the turn 3 bleachers and am attaching one of Jimmy Boyd for you. Keep up the good work. The old guys deserve to be remembered.
