McMahan Winner
East Bay Raceway - Fri. 2/15/02 By Scott Hall GIBSONTON, FL - Paul McMahan passed Terry McCarl on lap six and ran away from the field Friday night at East Bay Raceway in the All Star sprint 25-lap feature. Round three of the 26th annual East Bay Winternationals paid the pilot of Warren Johnson's No. U2 $4,000.
"We could run high or low tonight," McMahan said. "We plan to run 90% of the All Star shows this year and hit some special races all over the place," he revealed of his 2002 racing plans. McMahan also credited Hoosier Tires, Gaerte Engines and crew chief Mike Cool for the win.
Danny Lasoski started sixth and took over second from McCarl with only two laps remaining. "The track crew made the race track much better than I though they could get it," the pilot of Tony Stewart's Eagle stated. "We busted our tails to get here because dirt was where we wanted to be tonight," he added, alluding to his competing in the IROC race earlier in the day.
McCarl finally got the monkey off his back and finished third. "We struggled this week, but we have a race car now!" McCarl exclaimed. The A main, which pushed off at 12:07 A.M., almost made it through the first lap without incident but as the tail end of the field reached turn one, the cars bunched up and Billy Pauch lost the handle and collected Rodney Duncan, bringing out a caution. The field was reset for a complete restart. McMahan was on the pole for the restart with McCarl second, Chad Kemenah third and Fred Rahmer fourth. It took McMahan six laps to claim the race as his own but once he took the lead he checked out on the field. McCarl led the race early until McMahan passed him with an inside move in turn three. Billy Pauch spun out on lap 12 when his front axle broke, bringing out the second caution of the race.
From that point forward it was all McMahan and the race was for second. McCarl now held the number two spot with Rahmer third, Lasoski up to fourth and Kemenah fifth. The rest of the race went all green non-stop as McMahan entered lapped traffic on lap 18. Lasoski took over third from Rahmer on lap 22 and got by McCarl a lap later to ride home in second place. After McCarl it was Jeff Shepard in fourth after starting eighth in the G&G Motorsports Wesmar-Maxim. Rahmer held on to fifth in the Harz Racing Ott-J&J with Kemenah sixth in the Harble Motorsports Kistler-Eagle. Afternoon winner Tim Shaffer was next, with Lance Dewease, up from 12th starting spot, Shane Stewart from 15th and Jason Johnson completing the top ten finishers.
The Crown Battery heat fell to Kenny Jacobs, the B&B Products heat went to Scott Bonnell, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Kurt Winker, the TP Wings heat fell to Shane Stewart and the fifth heat to Jason Sides. Travis Rilat won the Georgia Marketing & Promotions C Main and Lasoski won the B Main.
The B main was an A main in disguise and, in the words of one observer, could be sold as a big-race money anywhere. It included Lasoski, Fred Rahmer, Craig Dollansky, Terry McCarl, Paul McMahan, Sean Michael, Dean Jacobs, Greg Hodnett, and Stevie Smith among others. The race went wire to wire without a caution with Lasoski lapping nine cars.
Septuagenarian Johnny Johnson turned the driving job over to his son Randy Johnson for this evening's show.
Top 10 in points for Saturday's East Bay Nationals, with the top six inverted, will make up the first three rows of the A Main. They are: Danny Lasoski 459, Lance Dewease 457, Fred Rahmer 456, Chad Kemenah 453, Shane Stewart 449, Gary Wright 444, Tyler Walker 439, Mike Wagner 434, Dean Jacobs 420, Stevie Smith 419. That puts Gary Wright and Shane Stewart on the front row Saturday night.
