MAX DUMESNY UNANIMOUSLY CHOSEN AS AUSTRALIAN SPRINTCAR "DRIVER OF THE YEAR" KNOXVILLE, IOWA (APRIL 27, 2002) - World Series Sprintcars (WSS) champion Max Dumesny, the Victorian-turned-Sydneysider, continues to record new milestones in his accomplished career. The latest feat is that he has successfully defended his Australian National Sprintcar Poll (ANSP) "Driver of the Year" title... unanimously! It is the first time in the nine-year history of the ANSP that the select voting panel of media members, promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers have totally agreed on the number one ranking at the conclusion of their racing season (September - April). Dumesny, who scored a victory in the Australian Title race at the Parramatta City Raceway (PCR), collected all fifteen (15) first place votes and also captured the "Team of the Year" honors for the second consecutive season with his Darryl "Mouse" Green-led Valvoline team.
Ranked second is Dumesny's arch-rival during the Australian racing season, Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic (GASC) winner Donny Schatz of Fargo, North Dakota. Schatz, runner-up to Max in the WSS point title, also won the big-dollar Parts Plus Summer Slam at Parramatta. Interestingly enough, World of Outlaws (WoO) star Schatz is also a co- recipient of this year's "Wild Card Award" for exciting sprintcar performances with Aussie 'Wild Child' Drew Kruck of Queensland. Rounding out the top ten drivers are PCR track champion Robbie Farr, Brooke Tatnell, Brad Furr of California, "Skip" Jackson, Stephen Bell, Kerry Madsen, Danny Smith of Indiana, and Troy Little, respectively.
"Rookie of the Year" honors went to Adrian Redpath of Tasmania in very close voting. Redpath follows in the footsteps of former rookies Troy Little (2000/01), Drew Kruck (1998/99) and Stephen Bell (1997/98). PCR promoter-turned-WSS administrator David Lander garnered his fourth "Promoter of the Year" honors due to his professional handling of Australia's coast-to-coast version of the American WoO tour. Lander's right-hand-man Wade Aunger, originally of Western Australia, will receive the poll's prestigious "Outstanding Contribution to the Sport Award" at the ANSP ceremonies to be held on Friday, August 9, in Knoxville, Iowa, during the 42nd annual Mopar Parts Knoxville Nationals. Aunger is the youngest-ever Australian recipient of this award.
Ken Veal of Precision Race Components has been named the Australian National Sprintcar Poll's "Builder/Manufacturer of the Year" for the first time. "Media Member of the Year" awards will be presented to "Oval Express" partners Jon Evans and Phil Jordison. For photographer Jordison, it will be his first-ever poll award. Writer Evans will claim his fourth plaque at Knoxville on the same night as the Kele World Challenge, formerly the Australian/American Challenge Cup.
