All Star Sprint Results - Eldora Speedway - Thu. 8/1/02 By Scott Hall ROSSBURG, OH - After winning the King's Royal a couple of weeks ago, Joey Saldana returned to Eldora Speedway's victory lane Thursday night in the All Star sprint 30-lap feature. Saldana's ride for the win, his first All Star victory of the season, was a Maxim Chassis with a Charlie Fisher powerplant which is owned by Fisher. The $5,000 to win event kicked off Eldora's Historical Big One weekend and came over Paul McMahan and Kenny Jacobs. Young Blake Feese, winner of the All Star opener here in April, actually passed Saldana's No. 48 for the lead on lap 18, but spun his car a lap later to hand the lead back to Saldana.
Butch Schroeder and Rodney Duncan brought the field to the green with Jimmy Stinson flipping violently down the frontstretch on the start. Stinson was okay. Duncan took over the lead when the mess was cleaned up and the green replaced the red.
Saldana, who started third, moved into second, passing Schroeder for the spot on lap two, and he began challenging Duncan's Harrison Trucking No. 22. Saldana took command on lap four, ahead of Duncan, sixth starter Paul McMahan and Feese, who started fifth on the grid.
Greg Wilson stopped on the track, bringing out a yellow with ten laps in the books. For the restart it was Saldana, McMahan's Warren Johnson Racing No. U2, Feese's No. 1F Maxim and Kenny Jacobs in his own No. 6. Saldana pulled out into the lead once again with Feese now on the move, taking over second with a dozen laps in the books. Feese moved in on Saldana, waiting for the right time to make his move, and he snared the lead on lap 18 after the leaders entered lapped traffic. But Feese lost the handle and spun his machine the next lap, bringing out a yellow and handing the lead, and the win, to Saldana.
McMahan regained second for the restart, ahead of Jacobs and Mike Wagner, who had started tenth. Lap 26 saw the final pass among the lead pack as 12th starter Jeff Shepard, aboard the Denny Ashworth No. 92, got around Wagner for fourth on lap 26, and that's the way they finished.
Behind Saldana, McMahan, Jacobs, Shepard and Wagner it was Chad Kemenah in sixth after starting 21st in Jimmy Harble's Kistler-powered Eagle Chassis. Dean Jacobs was seventh after starting 15th in the John Baker Excavating Maxim, followed by Dale Blaney in the Andrews Racing No. 72, Danny Smith in Guy Webb's No. 51 and Rookie of the Year contender Bill Rose in his own No. 6b. Rose had started 17th.
The Crown Battery heat fell to Todd Kane, the B&B Products heat went to Smith, the Engler Machine and Tool heat was won by Wagner and the TP Wings heat fell to Dean Jacobs. All Star points leader Kemenah blew his engine in time trials, forcing him to miss his heat and run the United Aluminum Window Sales & Consulting B Main, which he won. Blaney captured the Haulmark Dash.
Jim Dayton flipped in his heat, but emerged uninjured. In support division action, Brian Ruhlman won the UMP modified feature and Doug Matheny was the stock car feature winner.
