Haulmark All Star Sprint Results - Southern Iowa Speedway Front Row Challenge - Mon. 8/11/03 By TJ Buffenbarger
OSKALOOSA, IA (Aug. 11th) - Lance Dewease won Tuesday night's Haulmark All Star sprint car 25-lap Front Row Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Dewease ran down early leader Danny Lasoski in traffic and pulled away for his fourth Haulmark All Star sprint car victory of the season. Before the feature Dewease turned down the opportunity to start 24th for a $50,000 to win payoff. The original outside front row starter, NASCAR Busch Grand National driver Kasey Kahne, took the challenge and finished in the 10th position.
"The race track was pretty fast all night. We referred to what happened in the heat and the dash and knew it would be pretty tough to go to the rear and make it in time up there", said Dewease in victory lane. "My hats off to Kasey, he did it (for the fans) and try to put a show on."
With Kahne opting to start at the back the front row was made up of Dewease and Lasoski. Lasoski dove to the bottom in turn one to take the lead. Dewease then was left to battle with Shane Stewart for the second position. After racing side by side for several laps Dewease reclaimed the position on lap three. Then while working lap four Don Droud, Jr. flipped in turn three. Droud was uninjured.
Dewease was able to stay close to Lasoski after the restart. Dewease did lose ground though and on lap six found himself in a battle again with Shane Stewart. Stewart tried the low side of the track in turns one and two, but could not make the pass. Meanwhile Kahne moved up eight positions into 16th in his quest for the $50,000 bonus.
By lap 11 Dewase started to close in on Lasoski. The lead duo closed in on heavy lapped traffic on lap 12. Dewease used the lapped car of Brian Brown to pin in Lasoski and take the lead off turn four. Dewease then had to deal with traffic again on lap 16 that allowed Lasoski to close in, but Dewease cleared the slower cars to stretch his advantage. Kahne continued pass cars and by lap 17 was up to the 12th position and closed in on the top ten.
Chad Kemenah reeled in Shane Stewart and started to battle for the third position on lap 20. Kemenah pulled a slide job on Stewrat through turns three and four to take the position. Stewart came back one lap later to pass Kemenah again to reclaim the position. Up front though it was all Dewease as he cruised to the victory over Lasoski, Stewart, Kemenah, and Jason Johnson. Erin Crocker finished sixth in only her second 410 sprint car start. Ryan Coniam, Jeremy Campbell, Sammy Swindell, and Kahne rounded out the top ten.
"We were a little cold at the start, and the motor didn't take off real good. That's how everyone kind of got away from me. We had kind of a harder tire on and I thought it would be pretty good", concluded race winner Dewease. Lasoski was the quick qualifier during Huggins Cams qualifications with a lap of 15.708 seconds around the ½-mile oval. Ricky Logan won the crown battery heat, Daryn Pittman took the victory in the B&B Products heat, the Engler Machine & Tool heat victory fell to 410-sprint car rookie Eric Vanderploeg, and the TP Wings Heat victory fell to Shane Stewart.
Colin Northway won the Outerwears C-Main event, while All Star Rookie of the Year Candidate Ryan Coniam won the United Aluminum Window Sales & Consulting B-Main. Ryan Anderson won the non-qualifers race. All Star Circuit of Champions
