ROSSBURG, OH (Oct. 20) -- Due to the success of last month's Mopar Million at Eldora Speedway, the three participating parties - Mopar, Eldora Speedway and the United States Auto Club (USAC) - have agreed to present another major event for non-winged Sprint Cars in 2004. To be named the Mopar Thunder Sprint at Eldora, prize money in excess of $175,000 will be on the line for the one-night event, Saturday, August 7, 2004. Of that amount, $50,000 has been earmarked for the victor, and in keeping pace with the successful formula of the Mopar Million, the payoff will be generously spread throughout the starting field, with last place in the 40-lap chase guaranteed a minimum of $2,000.
"We were more than pleased with the outcome of the Mopar Million," stated Kevin Miller, Senior Brand Manager - Mopar Excitement, "and look forward to continuing that enthusiasm and interest in non-winged Sprint Car racing right through the new Mopar Thunder". Echoed Eldora's Earl Baltes, "USAC and non-winged Sprint racing has always been an important ingredient of Eldora's success, and now with Mopar joining in, we are definitely eager to step up to the plate and create an annual 'payday' for the non-wingers".
The Mopar Thunder will conclude three successive nights of Sprint Car racing on Eldora's famed high-banked one-half mile clay oval. Kicking off the activity will be the winged Sprints of the All Star Circuit of Champions on Thursday, August 5, while the traveling World of Outlaws (WoO) will fill the Friday, August 6 time frame. Saturday's rich Mopar Thunder for USAC Sprint Cars will replace the Historical Big One, which after eleven years, is being removed from the Eldora Speedway calendar.
USAC officials are working with the Eldora staff to assure that the Mopar Thunder will become a National Sprint event. Tickets for all three nights of racing will be available at the Eldora Speedway box office, 937.338.3815 starting November 1.
