Danny Stratton of Riverside, Calif. captured Saturday night's 30-lap USAC Western Midget Car feature at Stockton 99 (Calif.) Speedway. The race was co-sanctioned by USAC and BCRA and the win was the first in 2002 for the 2001 USAC Western Midget Car "Rookie of the Year." Stratton caught Marc DeBeaumont in traffic on lap 25 and led the rest of the way, while DeBeaumont fought power steering problems and slipped to 14th at the checkered flag after leading the first 24 laps on the 1/4-mile pavement. Stratton drove the Pinkston Esslinger/Edmunds to the win.
Robby Flock took second and series point leader Shane Scully was third ahead of Alex Harris and Travis Johnson. Stratton was the night's fastest qualifier. The Midgets now prepare for this Saturday night's USAC "doubleheader" at the Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway. The USAC Ford Focus Midgets are also on the program, with a 20-lap Ford Focus and a 30-lap Western Midget Car feature the main attractions on the 1/3-mile dirt oval.
