Swindell Wins Eldora Finale as Kinser Violates Weight Rule By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (April 19) – Steve Kinser, Craig Dollansky and Chad Kemenah were the first, fourth and fifth drivers to cross the finish line at Eldora Speedway Saturday. Unfortunately, their cars failed to meet the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series 1,375-pound weight limit, so they were disqualified. Ironically, Sammy Swindell, the first victim of the weight rule the series instituted at the beginning of the season, was declared the winner and received the $12,000 first prize. Swindell led laps 14-34 before Kinser passed him between the first and second corners early in the final lap.
“The Ore-Cal/Beef Packers car has been running good all year long,” Swindell said. “I just made some mistakes there at the end and got behind some guys who were racing side-by-side and slowed me down, and one hit the wall right in front of me. “I had this (weight) problem at Las Vegas – they said my car weighed light – so what comes around goes around I guess. I just know that we’ve made weight every time since then. We ran pretty hard tonight. I know Steve seems to get his elbows up a little bit when he sees me out there, and I probably do the same. Hopefully, we’ll be able to win another one of these races real soon.”
The victory, Swindell’s 15th at “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile,” made him the eighth driver to win an O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series main event this season. Kemenah, the runner-up in Friday’s Preliminary Feature, earned the right to start the 35-lap finale on the pole by winning the Dash Race. He raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway with O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Danny Lasoski as the green flag fell in the “A” Feature. “The Dude” surged ahead in the high groove in turn two. The caution flag fell late in the second lap when Randy Hannagan and P.J. Chesson spun.
“B” Feature winner Jonathan Allard, a Californian racing at Eldora Speedway for the first time, spun into the retaining wall in the second corner as the green flag replaced the yellow. Fast qualifier Brian Paulus took the high line around Kemenah between turns one and two for second place early in the fourth lap. Swindell, who started inside the third row, passed Dollansky for fifth in the high groove between the third and fourth corners the next time around. Lasoski was two car-lengths ahead of Paulus when he entered lapped traffic eight laps into the race. Paulus caught “The Dude” two laps later, however, and passed him for first place with a high move between turns three and four.
Swindell raced to the front during the next four laps. The three-time series champion drove the #1 Ore-Cal/Beef Packers Eagle around Kinser entering turn four late in lap 11, took the inside line past Lasoski and Kemenah between the first and second corners two laps later and passed Paulus for the lead with a similar move as they exited turn three late in the 15th lap. “The Dude” stopped NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle on the front stretch with a flat right rear tire the next time around. Kinser and Kemenah passed Paulus for second and third place within two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow.
Jac Haudenschild, who passed six cars during the first two laps, coasted off the track with a flat right rear tire during lap 18. Paulus lost fourth place when he stopped in turn four with a flat right rear tire three laps later. “The King of the Outlaws” and Kemenah exchanged second place during the two laps following the caution period. Kinser was only three car-lengths behind Swindell when the leaders caught the back-markers with eight laps remaining.
Dollansky and Kemenah took turns passing each other for third place during laps 31 and 32 before Tim Shaffer took fourth from Dollansky with an inside move into the fourth corner. Shaffer, Swindell’s Beef Packers teammate, passed Kemenah for third place late in lap 33. Kinser passed Swindell in the low groove between turns one and two early in the final lap, only to have his #11 Quaker State Maxim fail the minimum weight requirement several minutes later. Shaffer, who started inside the eighth row, finished in second place. Mark Kinser finished third, ahead of Jason Sides, Jeff Shepard, Lasoski, 16th-starting Daryn Pittman, Jason Johnson, Randy Hannagan, and Paul McMahan.
Sides, forced to take a provisional to start the main event after finishing 12th in the “B” Feature, started inside the 13th row. He drove the #7S Aramark Uniform Service Maxim past 21 cars on his way to the fourth-place finish. The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will sanction the Spring Classic at Knoxville Raceway Friday and Saturday. WoO
