Lasoski Wins Great Plains Shootout Preliminary By Richard Day GREENWOOD, NE (May 2) – O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Danny Lasoski continued his early-season hot streak Saturday by winning the Dodge Great Plains Shootout Preliminary Feature at Nebraska Raceway Park. The half-lap victory was the third straight for “The Dude.” Three-time series champion Sammy Swindell set the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series record with seven straight feature victories in 1997.

“I had no idea I was that far ahead at the finish,” Lasoski said. “(Crew chief) Jimmy (Carr) told me that it would probably take a while to get going in the feature. We put on a little harder tire than most, but anytime you’re racing ‘The King’ (Steve Kinser) you have to run your best and you know you have all you can handle.

“This track tonight was the best I’ve ever seen it – top, bottom, middle, wherever you wanted to run. My hat’s off to the track crew here. Tomorrow’s a different night. We’ll just have to see what other cars are running with us. The modifieds changed the track tonight, and it’s just something you have to keep up with all the time.”

Kinser, the defending and 17-time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion, won his ninth Dash Race of the year for the privilege of starting the 25-lap feature on the pole. He drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into to the lead as the green flag fell in the feature, only to have “The Dude” pass him in the low groove between turns three and four late in the opening lap. “The King of the Outlaws” regained the lead the next time around, riding the rim around Lasoski between the third and fourth corners. Paul McMahan, making his debut in the #11H Vivarin Maxim, stopped in turn one with brake problems to bring out the caution flag early in the third lap. McMahan, who won the Third Heat Race, collided with Brooke Tatnell early in the Second Dash Race and flipped. His crew brought out a back-up car for the evening’s main event.

Jason Sides pitted during the caution period so his crew could repair his nose wing and joined McMahan at the rear of the field when the race resumed. Tyler Walker and Mark Kinser, who has won five “A” Features at Nebraska Raceway Park, passed Joey Saldana for third and fourth place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Steve Kinser controlled the restart and was seven car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic during the seventh lap. Walker, who won the Spring Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway March 15th, coasted off the racing surface with mechanical problems three laps later.

“The Dude” caught Kinser in dense lapped traffic midway through the race, and drove NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle into the lead in the low groove between the first and second corners two laps later. Saldana and Mark Kinser exchanged third place during laps 20, 21 and 22. Saldana steered the #17 Eagle Raceway MCI around Kinser in the top groove between turns three and four. Mark came back with an inside move in the first corner, only to have the 1996 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year regain the position deep in turn four.

Donny Schatz, who started inside the 10th row, drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J past Craig Dollansky on the front straightaway to claim fifth place with two laps remaining. “The Dude” was half a lap ahead of Kinser when he took the checkered flag in his second Preliminary Feature victory of the season.

“This J.D. Byrider, Home Depot, Mopar car has really been fast,” Lasoski said. “My guys, Jimmy Carr and Todd Splain, have been working so hard that my job’s the easiest thing to do with this team. Our Hoosier Tires, Eagle Chassis and Kistler Engines have all been great. Saldana finished in third place, ahead of Mark Kinser, Schatz, Dollansky, Tim Shaffer, 21st-starting Ricky Logan, Second Dash Race winner Jonathan Allard and Johnny Herrera.

Kraig Kinser paced the qualifying session with a 103.144-M.P.H. lap around Nebraska Raceway Park’s semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval. It was the third time this season Steve Kinser’s son has set fast time. Engine problems in the #11K Delco-Remy Maxim kept Kraig from starting the Preliminary Feature, however, so Rick Ideus replaced him in the lineup.
