Mark Kinser Wins First Feature of the Year at Hagerstown By Richard Day HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 19) – Before Monday at Hagerstown Speedway, the last time Mark Kinser won an O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature he was leading the point standings. The two-time series champion dominated Monday’s rain-delayed main event at Hagerstown, leading all 30 laps to win for the first time this season. Almost 13 months passed since the 1984 co-Rookie of the Year paased Danny Lasoski for the points lead while winning at Lakeside Speedway. The $10,000 victory was Kinser’s fifth at Hagerstown’s ½-mile oval.
"Man, it feels good," Kinser yelled to the capacity crowd. "It’s been over a year for us. We picked up a sponsor for the eastern swing here with Sabco, and it’s nice to win for them. The car worked great all race long, but I knew there toward the end someone had to be coming.
"We had to change engines after qualifying. A lot of times when that happens you can’t get the car prepared for the later races, but my guys did a great job changing it in 15 minutes, and gave me a great car the rest of the night."
Kinser passed Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Jason Sides in the point standings Sunday at Grandview Speedway, then moved past the injured Craig Dollansky into fifth place Monday. Kinser, who set Hagerstown’s single-lap record with a 120.442-M.P.H. lap in 1999, was the sixth-fastest qualifier in the 33-car field. He earned the privilege of starting next to pole-sitter Johnny Herrera by winning his fifth Dash Race of the season.
Kinser drove father Karl Kinser’s #5M Durst Auctions/Williams Properties Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Brian Paulus, the last driver to qualify for the feature, collided with Fourth Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild and spun in turn two early in the second lap. Fast qualifier Steve Kinser was trying to maneuver around Sean Michael as the green flag replaced the yellow when Greg Hodnett passed him for sixth place on the front straightaway. Hodnett, the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year in 1993, took the inside line through the first and second corners to pass Michael the next time around. Donny Schatz used a similar move between turns three and four to pass Herrera for second place half a lap later.
Daryn Pittman, the "A" Feature winner at Hagerstown Speedway last May 18th, steered Sher-Don Motorsports’ #21 Hop & Sack J&J to the lowest point in the second corner to pass Steve Kinser for sixth place early in lap six. Mark Kinser was a straightaway ahead of Schatz when he entered lapped traffic two laps later. Hodnett passed Herrera deep in turn two, then raced around Schatz high in the fourth corner to claim the runner-up spot late in the 11th lap. Lasoski, the current O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader, passed Herrera in the low groove between turns one and two for sixth place eight laps later. Hodnett was 20 car-lengths behind Kinser midway through the race. He narrowed the gap to 10 car-lengths by lap 22, but Kinser was nine car-lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag to claim the 151st victory of his career.
Schatz moved past Haudenschild into eighth place in the point standings by finishing in third. Pittman raced into fourth place, ahead of Lance Dewease, Lasoski, Steve Kinser, 13th-starting Joey Saldana, Chad Layton and Paul McMahan. Sammy Swindell, who leads the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series with six "A" Feature victories at Hagerstown Speedway, raced past six cars to finish in 16th place. Kasey Kahne driving Karavan Racing’s #7 VMAC Maxim for Dollansky, won the "B" Feature and finished 17th in the main event. Steve Kinser paced the qualifying session, driving his #11 Quaker State Maxim around the semi-banked, ½-mile oval in 16.607 seconds – an average speed of 108.388 M.P.H. WoO
