Hodnett Completes Sweep of Outlaws Showdown By Richard Day CONCORD, NC (May 25) - Greg Hodnett became the first non-regular to sweep a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series double-feature event in 5 ½ years Saturday when he won the XM Satellite Radio Outlaws Showdown at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Hodnett, the series' Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year award winner in 1993, passed Jac Haudenschild in dense lapped traffic with 4 2/3 laps remaining to complete the first double-feature sweep of his career. Hodnett is the 11th driver to win a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main event this season.
"We'll definitely take this one," Hodnett said in victory lane. "The Apple Dealership team worked really hard all weekend long. Traffic was the key tonight. We ran the top early and the bottom came in, and those guys (Steve Kinser and Jac Haudenschild) were able to get by me. Then Steve got bottled up behind a lapped car and I got by him, and the same thing happened to Haud. I just tried to stay in line the last couple of laps and not make any mistakes. We're pretty happy because we don't get to run with these guys that often. We race locally in Pennsylvania, so we're definitely happy to be able to come down here and win."
The last non-regular to sweep a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series event was another Pennsylvania Posse member. Lance Dewease won the Williams Grove National Open Preliminary and "A" Features in 1996. Hodnett, who beat Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser under the checkered flag by seven car-lengths in Friday's Preliminary Feature, finished second behind "The King of the Outlaws" in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash Saturday. Hodnett raced around Kinser in the fourth corner to take the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature, however. Haudenschild steered Guy Forbrook's #5 Wirtgen Maxim into the low groove between turns one and two to pass Kinser for second place the next time around. "The Wild Child" used a similar move between the third and fourth corners to take the lead two laps later. Kinser, who won the Outlaws Championship at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway last October, drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Hodnett in turn four late in the sixth lap, then won a back-straightaway drag race in lapped traffic to take the lead three laps later.
"The Wild Child" regained first place three laps later, passing Kinser in the low groove between the first and second corners. Hodnett followed Haudenschild into second place in turn two. Donny Schatz, who has recorded eight top-six finishes in 10 features at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway, started making his way toward the front during the race's middle stages.
The 1997 Rookie of the Year drove his family's #15 Parker Stores J&J inside line in the second corner to pass Craig Dollansky for fifth place early in the 14th lap. After Randy Hannagan hit an infield tire barrier and spun in turn two three laps later, Schatz passed Shane Stewart deep in turn three. Haudenschild was 10 car-lengths ahead of Hodnett when he entered lapped traffic with six laps remaining. "The Wild Child" slowed behind "B" Feature runner-up Brian Paulus in the first corner the next time around, however, allowing Hodnett to execute the winning pass in turn two. Schatz took third place from Kinser with an inside move in the fourth corner late in lap 28, and almost passed Haudenschild in the low groove between turns one and two early in the final lap. "The Wild Child" was three car-lengths behind when Hodnett took the checkered flag.
The $20,000 victory was Hodnett's fourth in Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series competition. Kinser extended his points lead over Danny Lasoski to 17 points with his 17th top-five finish in the first 22 main events. Stewart finished in fifth place, ahead of Dollansky, Joey Saldana, Tyler Walker, Lasoski and First Heat Race winner Danny Wood. Johnny Herrera drove NASCAR Winston Cup crew chief Billy Wilburn's #2W Heintz Brothers Maxim past six cars to finish 14th. Lasoski, who leads the series with seven quick times, paced the qualifying session with a 105.363-M.P.H. lap around the semi-banked, 4/10-mile oval. Kurt Winker suffered a concussion when he spun into the retaining wall during his first qualifying lap and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will run $51,600 events at Lebanon Valley Speedway Memorial Day, Rolling Wheels Raceway Wednesday, Sharon Speedway Friday and Eldora Speedway Saturday.
