'The King' Caps Special Day With Victory at Eldora By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (June 1) - Saturday, two days before his 47th birthday, was a very special day for Steve Kinser. "The King of the Outlaws" saw his daughter graduate from high school and won the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at Eldora Speedway while his son finished in 15th place. The 25th Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main event victory at "The World's Fastest Half-Mile" was quite a reversal for Kinser, who suffered a blown engine while leading the "A" Feature and losing the points lead the night before at Sharon Speedway.

"I had a pretty good car all night long," said Kinser, whose eighth main event victory of the year pushed him to with 17 points of first place in the point standings. "I just had to wait for some guys to get a little loose late in the race. I like the cushion up along the wall here, but tonight we had a pretty big ledge about half way up the track, and it's got me breathing pretty heavy. "Last night, I was leading and broke, and there were still 24 cars out there running around. Monday night (points leader) Danny (Lasoski) was leading and broke and there were only 12 cars left running, so that kind of hurt us a little in the points. But it's still way too early in the year to think about that stuff, even though it does play on you a little. "We drove all night - well, actually my wife Dana did a lot of the driving - from Sharon back to Bloomington, IN, so I could watch my daughter, Stevie, graduate from high school this morning. I'm proud of her for getting through high school - now if we can just get her through college."

Kraig Kinser, who will graduate from high school next year, raced past seven cars to finish 15th in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 26th event of the season. Steve Kinser earned the right to start the "A" Feature inside the third row by following P.J. Chesson and Lasoski across the finish line in the First O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash. Brad Furr, who won the Second O'Reilly Auto Parts Dash, drove his #2 Sanmina/SCI Eagle into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event.

Joey Saldana raced past Lasoski and Chesson to take over second place during the opening lap. Furr was three car-lengths ahead of Saldana when the leaders entered lapped traffic seven laps into the race. Saldana narrowed the gap quickly, however, and drove the #17 Eagle Raceway/ HEM Saw Eagle into the inside groove between the first and second corners to take the lead the next time around. Saldana was trying to lap Kraig Kinser when he spun between turns three and four late in the 10th lap. Danny Wood flipped at the same time, bringing out the red flag. A mechanical problem in the #21 Hop & Sac J&J forced Daryn Pittman to stop in the third corner as the race resumed. Steve Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the low groove between turns three and four to pass Lasoski for third place midway through the race.

He and Chesson were nose-to-tail with Furr when they entered lapped traffic during lap 17. Chesson was challenging Furr for the lead two laps later when his right rear tire lost air pressure, sending his #76 crashing into the retaining wall in the third corner. "The King of the Outlaws" took the lead as the green flag replaced the red, passing Furr deep in turn two. Mark Kinser raced past a faltering Jac Haudenschild for fifth place between the first and second corners late in lap 21. Paul McMahan, who started outside the 10th row, passed Craig Dollansky for seventh place with an inside move in turn two five laps later. The engine in the #U2 United Expressline Eagle lost power in turn four as the checkered flag waved, but McMahan coasted across the finish line in 10th place.

Kinser, who was a straightaway ahead of Lasoski when he claimed the $10,000 first prize, had a flat left rear tire in victory lane. Furr finished in third place, ahead of Stevie Smith, Mark Kinser, Chad Kemenah, Dollansky, 16th-starting Randy Hannagan, Tim Shaffer and McMahan. Hannagan's crew replaced the engine in his #1X K&C Drywall Eagle following time trials. Lasoski paced the qualifying session for the eighth time this season, circling the high-banked, ½-mile oval in 13.119 seconds, an average speed of 137.206 M.P.H. Only .83 seconds separated the 26 cars taking qualifying laps.

The Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series will run $51,600 events at Farmer City Raceway Friday and the Terre Haute Action Track Saturday.
