‘The King’ Gets Back on Track at Huset’s Speedway By Richard Day BRANDON, SD (June 18) – Steve Kinser dismissed the disappointment of losing the lead in the Duel in the Dakotas main event Wednesday by winning the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at Huset’s Speedway. "The King of the Outlaws" was leading Saturday’s $20,000-to-win championship feature when Wade Nugaard flipped into his #11 Quaker State Maxim, putting him out of the race. Kinser exchanged the lead with nemesis Sammy Swindell three times Wednesday en route to the sixth victory of his career at Brandon’s 3/8-mile oval.
"We’ve had a good, fast car all year long," Kinser said following his 10th main event victory of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ 25th Anniversary Season. "We got into a wreck while leading it at Fargo, but that happens once in a while in racing. It’s a shame because it was a pretty big race."
"That (battle with Swindell) was one of many, many we’ve had over the years. It seems like me and Sammy and Doug (Wolfgang) pretty much dominated the top three spots when this thing first started, and it’s good to still be able to be out here doing it. There’s at least four races this year we either fell out of or got disqualified from, but we’re still winning races and there’s still a long way to go."
Kinser, the third-fastest qualifier in the 30-car field, earned the right to start the 35-lap "A" Feature outside the second row by following Swindell across the finish line in the Second Dash Race. Pole-sitter Paul McMahan drove the #11H Vivarin Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Swindell, who has won five "A" Features at Huset’s, took the lead with an inside move into the second corner several seconds later. "The King of the Outlaws" exchanged third place with Jason Meyers four times in the first four laps. He raced wheel-to-wheel with McMahan and Meyers through much of the fifth lap before passing them both.
Kinser was six car-lengths behind when Swindell entered lapped traffic late in lap six. Swindell lost his advantage two laps later when Eric Vanderploeg spun in turn two.
The three-time series champion controlled the ensuing restart, but was only a car-length ahead of Kinser when he caught the back-markers during lap 10. Kinser challenged Swindell for 2 2/3 laps before passing him for the lead in the low groove between the third and fourth corners late in the 13th lap.
Swindell regained first place the next time around, driving the #1 Ore-Cal/Beef Packers J&J past Kinser deep in turn two. "The King of the Outlaws" executed the winning move six laps later, passing Swindell in the low groove between the first and second corners. McMahan took the high line through turn four to pass Sammy for the runner-up spot the next time around. Swindell surrendered third place late in lap 22, stopping on the front straightaway with a flat right front tire.
Mechanical problems in the #7S Aramark Uniform Services Maxim forced First Heat Race winner Jason Sides to stop in the second corner at the same time. Kinser raced away from the other 23 cars as the green flag replaced the yellow, and opened a 10-car-length advantage within four laps. McMahan closed to within three car-lengths in dense lapped traffic during lap 29, however. McMahan was threatening to take the lead two laps later, but Kinser’s daring move between Sides and Brandon Wimmer in turn four gave him a 10-car-length advantage. "The King of the Outlaws" took the checkered flag with eight car-lengths to spare.
O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points leader Danny Lasoski finished in third place, ahead of Meyers, Daryn Pittman, Second Heat Race winner Joey Saldana, Third Heat Race winner Donny Schatz, Mark Kinser and Terry McCarl. Brian Paulus drove P and P Motorsports’ #28 Verdelli Farms Maxim past 10 cars to finish 10th. Schatz drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J into seventh place from outside the seventh row. The 1997 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year moved past Sides into fifth place in the point standings with his 19th top-10 finish of the season.
Kraig Kinser flipped after he and Pittman collided on the front straightaway early in the Second Heat Race. Although Steve Kinser’s 18-year-old son was uninjured, the #11K Delco-Remy International Maxim was destroyed. Kraig drove a back-up car past seven cars in the "B" Feature, then raced into 16th place from outside the 12th row in the main event. Lasoski paced the qualifying session for the 13th time this season, circling the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval in 10.755 seconds – an average speed of 125.523 M.P.H.
