Lasoski Continues Winning Ways at Hometown Track By Richard Day SEDALIA, MO (June 26) – It’s been quite an outstanding week for Danny Lasoski. "The Dude" completed his sweep of the 97 Country Outlaws Nationals Monday, his benefit golf tournament raised $63,000 Tuesday and he and his nephew won feature races at State Fair Motor Speedway Wednesday. Lasoski’s second straight Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series victory pushed him to within eight points of standings leader Steve Kinser. "This has been a pretty good week," Lasoski said. "To win at Topeka Monday, and then have our Michael Ross Memorial Foundation golf tournament be so successful yesterday, and then my nephew, Brian Brown, winning the 360’s earlier tonight, and now a win in front of my hometown crowd … well, it doesn’t get any better than this! My crew chief, Jimmy Carr, is the best in the business. All my guys worked their butts off yesterday – they didn’t even get to come play golf – to give me an awesome car here tonight. "Maybe this kind of makes up for the major driver error at Eagle Saturday night. I hit the wall there and it cost us the points lead, but there’s still a long way to go in the season."
Lasoski, the sixth-fastest in the 24-car qualifying session separated by only 1.491 seconds, earned the right to start the "A" Feature on the front row by winning the Second O’Reilly Auto Parts Dash. He raced wheel-to-wheel with pole-sitter Stevie Smith on the front straightaway before taking the lead in the high groove between turns one and two.
Daryn Pittman, whose engine problems in his personal vehicle caused to arrive at State Fair Motor Speedway after the hot-lap session, won the First Heat Race. The defending World of Outlaws Gumout Series champion started the "A" Feature inside the seventh row and drove the #21 Hop & Sac J&J past six cars before racing into the low groove in the second corner to pass Joey Saldana for sixth place early in lap two. Third Heat Race winner Donny Schatz passed fast-qualifier Danny Wood deep in turn four to take over 10th place three laps later. "The Dude" was a half-straightaway ahead of Smith when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. Randy Anderson opened the track ahead of the leaders two laps later when he spun in the second corner.
Schatz continued his run toward the front when the green flag replaced the yellow, driving his family’s #15 Parker Stores J&J into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass both Randy Hannagan and Saldana for seventh place. Kinser, whose crew replaced the engine in his #11 Quaker State Maxim following the Second Heat Race, claimed the runner-up spot with an inside move past Smith heading into turn four several seconds later. Pittman passed Tim Shaffer in the low groove between the first and second corners just seconds behind Brandon Wimmer stopped in turn four with throttle problems.
Lasoski controlled the ensuing restart and opened a 10-car-length advantage by the time he caught the back-markers again five laps later. Pittman and Schatz found the low groove to their liking during the final 10 laps and raced into third and sixth place, respectively. Pittman passed Second Heat Race winner Craig Dollansky between turns three and four late in the 16th lap, and used a similar move to pass Smith for third place five laps later. Schatz got by Hannagan entering the second corner early in lap 18, then passed Shaffer for sixth between turns three and four with 1 ¼ laps remaining. Kinser was racing through turn four when "The Dude" drove the #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle under the checkered flag.
Leading all 25 laps extended Lasoski’s consecutive laps streak to 60. The $10,000 victory was his ninth of the season and his third in the last four years at State Fair Motor Speedway. "I knew that trying to get by Stevie there at the start was going to be important," Lasoski said. "Track position here at Sedalia is everything, especially when the cushion gets all the way out to the wall like it was tonight. It’s just tough to pass when it gets like that, so I wanted get out front as quickly as I could." Pittman finished in third place, ahead of Smith, Dollansky, Schatz, Shaffer, Hannagan, 15th-starting Mark Kinser and Saldana.
Wood was the fastest qualifier for the second time this season, driving the #6 Casey’s General Stores Maxim around the semi-banked, ½-mile oval in 16.373 seconds, an average speed of 109.937 M.P.H. Many Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series drivers participated in the Tuesday’s Ross Memorial Golf Tournament. The fifth annual event raised more than $63,000 for the Michael Ross Memorial Foundation and the Bay Cliff Health Camp. The camp provides care for children who have special physical needs and would otherwise not be able to attend a summer camp. Tony Ross, president of American Compressed Steel, flew with Lasoski to Michigan Thursday to donate a check to the Bay Cliff Health Camp.
