NO SHOCK - DANNY LASOSKI EARNS NATIONALS WIN - HD Staff, 08/16/03 - Knoxville, IA. - Danny Lasoski drove with precision Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway to win the biggest prize in winged sprint car racing, the Knoxville Nationals. For the third time in his brilliant career, the Missouri driver took home the winner's check, this year, $125,000. Lasoski is the all-time career wins leader at the "Sprint Car Capital of the World". Driving the Tony Stewart backed, Eagle chassis #20, Lasoski took the lead from Donny Schatz on lap eight coming off of turn two.
Schatz, the polesitter, was the race leader for the first 4 miles on the slightly banked 1/2 mile clay oval. However, Lasoski continued to cut laps on the lower regions of the turns, making up valuable time and distance. The winning pass was a blur of Lasoski making like a missile in the moisture that ends turn two and starts the back straightaway.
At some point during the run, Lasoski's left rear shock was rendered useless, having disconnected itself. With two laps remaining a caution flag flew for Daryn Pittman. The J&J shod driver stopped on the track, setting up a chance for Schatz to make a bid at Lasoski's lead. Despite the shock problem, and two shaky laps by Lasoski to close the race, Schatz could not catch "The Dude". Because of a tremendous restart, Lasoski's advantage over Schatz was large enough to reach the checkered flag first.
Kenny Jacobs was on top of his game, charging his Kriner powered #70 to a third place finish. Sammy Swindell, swept past four cars to finish fourth. The top five was rounded out by Greg Hodnett. 12-time Nationals champion, Steve Kinser also passed four machines on his way to a hard fought sixth. Shane Stewart was seventh, and Paul McMahan finished eighth.
California charger Jason Meyers put on a passing display with a run from 17th on the grid to ninth. In the V-Mac FattFro #7, Meyers, who is subbing for injured Craig Dollansky, maneuvered around more cars than anyone else in the A-Main. Completing the top ten was Pennsylvanian, Stevie Smith.
22 year-old lady racer, Eric Crocker set the sprint car world on it's ear by being named Rookie of the Nationals. She was the only rookie to make the A-Main. Chad Kemenah also had a good night. The B-feature winner stormed from 21st to 14th in the A-main.
Tim Kaeding was the C-Main winner, and moved all the way up to eighth in the B-Main.
