Todd Shaffer

...Glad to hear that Todd Shaffer is returning this season after a serious injury ended his 2002 season early. Shaffer was having another strong season at Williams Grove last August 23 when a car slowed in front of him on the backstretch leaving Todd with nowhere to go. Shaffer drove over the disabled car's wheel and was launched in a series of violent flips on the fastest part of the racetrack. He sustained a crushed left kneecap. Not only did it cost the `95 Grove champion a shot at another title, but the severity of the injury left his racing career in doubt. After months of painful rehab Shaffer has pronounced himself ready to go racing. "I'd say my knee is about 95 per cent," he said. "It's definitely not the way it was before the crash, but it keeps getting better." Shaffer currently trails only Lance Dewease, Fred Rahmer Don Kreitz, Keith Kauffman and Steve Kinser among active drivers on the Grove's list of sprint car winners. Shaffer will return with his long time car owner Gary Beam. The Beam team will again use Wolfweld chassis built by Hall of Famer Doug Wolfgang. Engine builder Don Ott will again supply the power.
